Remember, remember the 5th of November, an anniversary marking the end of a plot in 1605 to blow up King James I and the houses of parliament by catholic conspirator Guy Fawkes. Not only does this remind us of the dangers of going against the establishment but also that the history of our fair city has been well and truly shaped by the royals past and present. The magnificent Royal Opera House was first erected in 1730. Since then 3 buildings have stood on the site. The current building dates from the mid-1850s and was designed by E. M. Barry – the son of Sir Charles Barry, the architect of the Palace of Westminster. One of its largest event space is the beautiful Paul Hamlyn Hall which comprises a magnificent barrelled roof and stunning ironwork.
